Background

Dr Nicole Robinson is a researcher specializing in human-robot teaming with extensive experience in deploying heterogeneous robot teams in harsh environments. Her work focuses on improving collaboration between humans and autonomous systems through behavioural science techniques and operator analysis. She led the CSIRO x Monash collaboration, which conducted one of the largest real-world scientific search and rescue test deployments to date, specifically testing operator involvement and autonomy advancement in human-robot team performance.

As part of SAEF, Nicole will develop experimental metrics for assessing human-robot team dynamics, analyse operator performance to identify improvement opportunities, and design frameworks for deploying robots in environmental preservation efforts. Her research aims to optimize task allocation in heterogeneous teams by leveraging AI models and behavioural analysis to enhance overall mission effectiveness in extreme environments.

“I am driven to secure Antarctica’s environmental future because our innovative human-robot teaming approaches can revolutionize how we monitor, protect, and preserve this pristine yet vulnerable ecosystem while minimizing human impact on global climate change.
