Background

Matthias is a community ecologist with interests in macroecology and ecological networks. For his PhD, he studied functional relationships between birds and plants along an elevational gradient in the Peruvian Andes. During postdocs in New Zealand, Germany, Norway, and Switzerland, Matthias worked on methods for characterizing the functional roles of species in ecological processes, combining data from interaction networks and functional traits, as well as on methods to describe large-scale patterns of taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity. A current focus of Matthias’s research addresses possible consequences of environmental changes for species communities and ecological processes.
