  • Thea Stoneman

I am a University of Wollongong PhD student, fascinated by the intersection of law and science in protecting the unique biodiversity of Antarctica and its surrounding waters. I enjoy research in all its forms, from the prospect research I do at work, to the legal research I’ll be undertaking for my thesis and any bio/geo/ecological…

  • Oakes Holland

Oakes is an Antarctic marine ecologist with an interest in nearshore benthic communities. Her previous work includes the first comprehensive risk assessment for marine invasive species to these nearshore environments. Within SAEF she will continue her work on nearshore environments with the aim to increase protection for the conservation of these areas.

  • Elise Mills

Elise is currently an undergraduate student studying applied and computational mathematics, working as a Research Assistant at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and is a member of QUT’s Applied Mathematical Ecology Group. She has previously completed undergraduate degrees in applied science (biotechnology and biomolecular science) and classical music. Elise’s research interest is mathematical ecology and…

  • Ruth Davis

Ruth’s primary research interests are in the fields of international environmental law, marine environmental law and polar law and governance. She is currently working on a PhD thesis concerning the protection of cetaceans under international law.

  • Justine Shaw

Associate Professor Justine Shaw is a conservation scientist, who works on the ecology and management of Antarctic and island ecosystems. Her research focuses on the interface of policy, governance and ecosystem science and aims to inform and improve environmental protection and conservation decision-making for species. Antarctic and sub-Antarctic island ecosystems remain the last true wilderness…

  • Cari Rand

Cari is a PhD student supervised by Professor Andrew Mackintosh. He received his Bachelor of Science in geology from James Madison University for work dealing with X-ray-fluorescence chemostratigraphy of seafloor sediment cores and his Master of Science in geology from Tulane University for work dealing with the interpretation of erosion rates from paired cosmogenic-nuclide concentrations….

  • Charlotte Patterson

Charlotte is a PhD candidate at Queensland University of Technology under the supervision of Dr Justine Shaw and Dr Kate Helmstedt. Her PhD aims to identify and prioritise data-deficient taxa in Antarctica’s ice-free areas to then predict their current and future distributions, exploring the adequacy of current predictive modelling techniques in data-poor contexts. She is…

  • Larissa Lubiana Botelho

Larissa’s main research area is modelling complex systems applied to ecology and environmental policy. In her PhD, supervised by Prof. Michael Bode, Dr Kate Helmstedt and Prof. Kerrie Wilson, she is investigating how internal and external parameters of the Antarctic Treaty System affect Antarctica’s governance, aiming to build a model that can reproduce the political…

  • Cassandra Brooks

Cassandra’s research draws on a diversity of disciplines including marine science, environmental policy and science communication to study and seek solutions to pressing environmental problems. Active in the Antarctic science policy sphere since 2012, Cassandra has participated in meetings of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) through the SCAR delegation.

  • Jonny Stark

Jonny is a Principal Research Scientist in the Environmental Protection Program and section leader of Coastal Marine Ecology at the Australian Antarctic Division. He is a marine ecologist with a focus on research into the effects of environmental change on marine communities to inform and influence environmental management. This includes research to support evidenced-based decision-making,…

  • Kerrie Mengersen

Kerrie’s focus is on using and developing new statistical and computational methods that can help to solve complex problems in the real world. These problems are in the fields of environment, genetics, health and medicine, and industry. Her research expertise includes Bayesian statistics, hierarchical modelling and complex systems. She is currently the director of the…
