With gratitude, SAEF recognises Joanna Burrows’s contributions and proudly acknowledges them among our valued alumni.
Jo Burrows is a research degree candidate at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) supervised by Professors Kerrie Wilson and Michael Bode, with interests in conservation policy, environmental management, and social-ecological systems. Her current research investigates science and policy approaches for ensuring Antarctic Specially Protected Areas are effective as conservation interventions. Through this work, she aims to play a role in securing Antarctica’s environmental future by supporting robust and evidence-based environmental management in order to protect the continent’s unique conservation values.
Jo has a background as a conservation science and policy specialist in the Queensland Government, working on a variety of policies and programs including biodiversity offsets, protected areas, and threatened species management. A passionate educator, Jo began her career as a high school teacher and currently teaches undergraduate and postgraduate conservation science units at The University of Queensland and QUT.
