Theresa Cole

Theresa’s research focuses on evolutionary biology and molecular ecology, using seabirds as a model to understand how species adapt and evolve in changing environments. Her work explores phylogenetics, the genetic basis of adaptation, and population connectivity across marine ecosystems.

As part of Theresa’s fellowship as her role in SAEF, she will investigate Antarctic ecosystem change using sedimentary ancient DNA, including DNA preserved in seabird guano and stomach oil deposits, to reconstruct past ecological dynamics and understand long-term environmental responses. She is also keen to build interdisciplinary collaborations within the Antarctic research community and contribute to the evidence base needed to support the conservation and sustainable management of Antarctica’s unique ecosystems. Theresa holds an Adelaide University Ramsay Fellowship (2026-2030).

I want to help secure Antarctica’s environmental future by using evolutionary and ecological research to understand ecosystem change and provide the evidence needed to protect its unique biodiversity.
