Policy Briefing: Polar Geoengineering will not Safeguard Antarctica

This briefing collates factsheets on five widely-publicised polar geoengineering ideas. These are large-scale technological concepts proposed to address the effects of global warming on the polar regions.

The goal is to help policymakers understand why these approaches might do more harm than good, and to support smarter, safer climate decisions for Antarctica’s future.

The factsheets break down the complex science behind each idea into simple terms and highlight for each polar geoengineering concept the risks, unintended consequences, and long-term problems that could result from them.

By contrast, sustained efforts to reduce to greenhouse gas emissions, along with other options such as area protection, will address the effects of global warming on the poles rapidly by dealing with the source of the problems.

Adopting such approach will have benefits for the entire planet, including threats faced by Australian society and our neighbours in the Indo-Pacific.

Microbes can survive dark Antarctic winters and a hotter future by living on air

“It’s a bit like seeing a penguin thrive in a tropical jungle.” That’s how SAEF scientist Dr Ry Holland from Monash University describes new research that has shown Antarctic microbes can survive in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 75°C – a staggering 95°C temperature span.   The study, led by SAEF…
