Background
Narmilan Amarasingam is an Associate Research Fellow at the University of Wollongong, working with the Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future (SAEF) project. With his Ph.D. research in precision agriculture and vegetation mapping, which was recently submitted for examination at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Narmilan specialises in UAV-based remote sensing and artificial intelligence for environmental monitoring. Narmilan holds a master’s degree in agricultural engineering and a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Eastern University, Sri Lanka, along with a bachelor’s degree in information technology from the University of Colombo School of Computing in Sri Lanka, combining expertise in precision agriculture, biosystems engineering, and software development.
Narmilan’s research interests include precision agriculture, remote sensing, multispectral and hyperspectral image processing, artificial intelligence, biosystems engineering, and environmental management. He is also engaged in irrigation and water management, as well as hydrology and meteorology, applying this expertise to sustainable ecosystem monitoring. In his role at SAEF, Narmilan employs cutting-edge UAV and satellite data to study how Antarctic vegetation is influenced by hydrological components, integrating AI-driven methods for enhanced precision in vegetation monitoring.
