Discover the latest information about our 2024-25 Field Season

This season, SAEF has over 40 scientists and professional staff heading south on expeditions to Antarctica. Against the backdrop of another year of devastatingly low sea ice and the arrival of H5N1 Avian flu, our multidisciplinary teams will undertake fieldwork and leadership development designed to deliver the science and future workforce required to address the region’s most urgent challenges.

This year, SAEF expeditioners will reach more areas of the continent than ever before, with teams heading to the Holtedahl Mountains in Dronning Maud Land, the Denman Glacier and Bunger Hills in Wilkes Land, the Morozumi Mountains in North Victoria Land and the Antarctic Peninsula.

These expeditions are supported by key partnerships with the Australian Antarctic Division; the New Zealand Antarctic Science Platform and Antarctica New Zealand; the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office; the Chilean Antarctic Program (INACH); and the private-sector travel providers, White Desert, Noble Caledonia and HX Expeditions.

As Antarctica and the Southern Ocean continue to experience rapid changes with influences felt across the globe, it has never been more critical to deliver science to inform policy to secure Antarctica’s future and our future.
